Scotland is taking action #ScotlandHour – Wednesday 14th July, 9-10pm
Sustainable Tourism
This is a special, mid-month #ScotlandHour to tackle Scotland’s climate crisis. The activity is taking place in support of the Scottish Government’s #LetsDoNetZero campaign, which launched in June and aims to raise awareness of the twin crises of climate change and nature loss and highlight how Scotland is taking action to get us to net zero.
Climate change and nature loss are the greatest threats facing the world’s population. They are not a distant, far away problem: they are here in Scotland and we’re seeing the impact already.
Scotland has set an ambitious target to become ‘Net Zero’ by 2045, five years ahead of the rest of the UK. Net zero is when the amount of greenhouse gas emissions we put into the atmosphere and the amount we’re able to take out add up to zero. Reaching net zero is key to tackling the global climate emergency, because of the ongoing effects of climate change. This will mean making changes to the way we live in four key areas, including what we buy, how we travel, what we eat, and how we heat and power our homes in order to reduce climate threats and ultimately meet Scotland’s 2045 net zero targets.
We all need to work together to make these changes to tackle the climate crisis and this Scotland Hour will focus on how the tourism industry is already taking action. It is vital we protect and enhance our natural surroundings, which is currently under threat – already 25% of our wildlife has been lost with more at risk, and 11% of our species are facing extinction. This is a tragic consequence of the global climate emergency. The natural world is not just exciting and beautiful, it is the bedrock of all we do, and it has a key role to play in tackling climate change.
We need a future that embraces and protects nature to meet the significant challenge of climate change, and we can only achieve this by preventing further biodiversity loss. So, #LetsDoNetZero together and protect, restore and enhance our lands, seas and the species that inhabit them.
Hosts for this #ScotlandHour session include VisitScotNews, ASVA and Green Tourism.
